Barriers to community engagement

joseph-rowtree-foundationWhy are some groups reluctant to get involved in local decision-making?

What are the barriers faced by ethnic minorities and women in particular to participating in community structures?

What are the motivations, influences and skills which have led to successful community engagement by people often seen as socially ‘excluded’?

These were questions at the centre of a Joseph Rowntree funded research study conducted during 2006/7 by interviewers from Transformations in partnership with Pioneer Links Ltd.

More than 100 people active in local communities were interviewed in Birmingham and Wolverhampton for this qualitative assessment.
